High gloss levels cause reflection and glare which can confuse the visually impaired. In terms of colour scheming, reflectance can be reduced by avoiding shiny surfaces. Highly glossed finishes will serve to increase light reflectance and add to visual confusion but matt finishes will absorb light and significantly reduce glare. Gloss finishes applied to flooring have the added detriment that they look unsafe. Elderly people in particular will take more care on what looks to be a slippery surface.
