Using a vibrant colour to create a feature wall has long been a popular design choice, but the IHG Group’s new award winning Hotel Indigo Liverpool, designed by Falconer Chester Hall, has taken this a step further. Each of the six floors and each of the 151 bedrooms in the new luxury boutique hotel makes bold use of a single feature colour drawn from a vivid and contemporary palette.
The striking scheme has been brought to life by C&J Painting Ltd of Liverpool using Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt which has been perfectly colour matched to meet the architects’ requirements by the local Crown Decorating Centre.
“A hotel under the Hotel Indigo brand always aims to reflect the history and culture of its local neighbourhood whilst offering a contemporary environment for its guests,” says David Hughes, manager of the new Liverpool hotel.
“Colour is a huge part of what our hotel is all about. We’re in the commercial district which used to be the heart of the cotton industry in the city and we’ve reflected this heritage in the interior design, through the artwork, our stunning murals and of course the vibrant wall colour choices all the way through. Achieving those colours with Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt means we also have the tough durability needed to maintain pristine appearances in a heavily trafficked luxury four star hotel.”
On each floor, lime, teal, orange, magenta or yellow has been used to decorate the corridors, with the colour repeated in all the signage. Inside each bedroom one of these signature colours has been used to decorate a feature wall and to perfectly complement a distinctive mural and beautifully co-ordinated soft furnishings
As a contrast, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt in a creamy white shade has been used on the other walls and ceilings, and Crown Trade Satin Finish has been used on all woodwork.
C&J also decorated walls and ceilings in the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, one of the hotel’s key attractions. Again Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt has been used to deliver a finish that can withstand the rigours of a very busy public area, and that can be scrubbed clean time and time again.
Painting onto bare plaster, the C&J team used a 60:40 diluted mix of Scrubbable Matt as a first decoration coat followed by two further full coats. With 151 bedrooms, six corridors and lift lobbies, the restaurant and other areas of the hotel to decorate, it took a team of eight men approximately four months working non-stop to complete the job.
“We got some great help, as always, from Robbie and his team at the Crown Decorating Centre in Liverpool,” says Jeff Watts who co-owns C&J Painting Ltd with Colin Bailey.
“Getting the precise colours that the architects wanted was vital and the staff managed to mix our Scrubbable Matt to the exact shades required. They also made extra deliveries to the hotel at short notice for us which was particularly helpful.”
Hotel Manager David Hughes is delighted with the finished results: “Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt has proved to be a great choice of paint and has given us fantastic colour and an excellent finish.”
He admits to having a favourite amongst the contemporary colours chosen. “My favourite is the lime and I love the design scheme in those rooms, but to be honest, every area of the hotel is bright and exciting. Our aim at Hotel Indigo is to be vibrant, chic and unique.... and Crown Trade and our decorators have helped us to achieve that.”
The venue is receiving plenty of positive feedback locally and in November won the ‘Best Hotel Design’ in the Northern Design Awards of 2011.
Following on from their work at Hotel Indigo Liverpool, C&J Painting Ltd has been awarded a contract to decorate the equally vibrant Hotel Indigo Birmingham. On their recommendation, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt is now being used to deliver the vivid colour palettes and durability required at this chic and contemporary hotel, club and spa located at the iconic Cube building in the city centre.
