Solutions:
Knots, resin exudation

Causes

Crown Trade Painted wood: Knots, resin exudation

  • Excessive resin level/content
  • Resinous species of timber
  • Solar gain (heat absorption of
    dark coloured finishes)

Resins are a natural constituent of timber, and, if present in excessive quantities, will inevitably result discolouration, disfigurement or blistering of the decorative coatings. The removal of excess levels of these resins prior to treatment will reduce the risk of these types of problems.
Knotting can only be regarded as a precaution against resin staining.

Solution:

Remove excess resin from knots and other resinous areas by the use of a hot air paint stripper. Wipe immediately with methylated spirit to remove residue. Apply two thin coats of fresh knotting to all exposed knots. Allow to dry.
