Loose, flaking and failing coatings

Causes

Crown Trade Woodstain and Varnished: Loose, flaking and failing coatings

  • Powdery, chalky or friable substrate
  • Moisture ingress
  • Weakly adhering underlying coatings
  • Inadequate surface preparation

Inadequate surface preparation is often the cause of these types of failures. Open joints, bare surfaces and defective glazing, allowing moisture ingress, will also result in adhesion failures. Coatings that have become brittle with age are susceptible to cracking. Defective coatings should be completely stripped back to bare woodwork. Where breakdowns are extensive, the complete section of joinery should be stripped back to a natural joint.

Solution:

Remove all loose and defective coatings by scraping and/or the use of a hot air paint stripper, or a proprietary paint/varnish remover. Rub down and feather edges of sound coatings with a fine grade abrasive paper. Remove all dust.
