At Crown Paints we are proud to say that over 200 years of knowledge, experience and passion go into each can of paint that we manufacture.
Our history is a rich mixture of ingredients, with origins as early as 1777, when James Greenway first established Dob Meadows Print Shop for calico printing in Darwen, Lancashire.
After perfecting the art of commercial wallpaper production in the 1800’s, the first experiments in water based paints began in 1904, with Walpamur Paint Company established two years later in 1906. Walpamur grew from strength to strength with its paint even being used for the Demarcation stripes on all planes in the D-Day landing in 1944.
First introduced to the market in the 1970’s, Crown was originally a brand name under Walpamur, with the company officially becoming Crown Paints Ltd in the 1990’s.
From 1982 – 1988 Crown Paints were proud sponsors of Liverpool FC, and with the club winning an impressive 4 League titles, 1 FA Cup, 3 League Cups, 2 Community Shields and 1 European Cup during the 6 year sponsorship, it was one of the most successful periods in the clubs history.
In 2001, Crown Paints launched one of our most well known innovations, our unique Breatheasy® 99% solvent free formulation. We further enhanced our green credentials 7 years later in 2008 with the launch of our sustainability programme, Earthbalance®.
In 2011 Crown Paints became a part of the Hempel Group, a world-leading coatings supplier to the decorative, protective, marine, container and yacht markets. 2015 marked the 100 year anniversary of Hempel with Crown Paints looking forward to being a much larger part of the next 100.
2018 was another milestone for Crown Paints as we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of our Earthbalance programme, a decade of performing ‘Responsible Business’. During this time we have achieved a great deal and come a long way in increasing our sustainability and reducing our footprint. With ambitious plans for the next 10 years, we will continue to live and support our sustainability agenda, building our way towards an even more sustainable future.
