Crown Paints Takes Top Industry Title
Staff at Crown Paints are celebrating after winning a major award from the industry’s national trade body, The British Coatings Federation.
The manufacturer’s Hull site secured the Federation’s Coatings Care Best Performance Award, which reflects all round excellence in the industry.
Held at Wychwood Park in Cheshire, the awards’ event attracted representatives from across the coatings industry.
Tom Bowtell, CEO of the British Coatings Federation (BCF) said: “Crown Paints has demonstrated a strong commitment to making its business more sustainable.
“This has been achieved through initiatives including energy and waste reductions, the creation of more sustainable products and by introducing a partnership with an onsite social enterprise.
“It’s a great achievement overall.”
This award comes less than 12 months after Crown Paints completed a major project, which saw a seven figure sum invested on the latest high-speed manufacturing system at Hull.
The line is one of the fastest in the world and is capable of accelerating the paint filling process by as much as 75 per cent.
As well as offering significant advances in filling rates, the new £1 million plus facility, based at Crown’s manufacturing site in Sculcoates Lane in Hull, significantly reduces the amount of water needed to clean paint delivery pipework, as well as reducing the usage of both electrical power and compressed air by approximately 25 per cent.
The accolade recognised Crown’s improved energy and waste reductions, zero waste to landfill and high percentage recycling rates, all achieved under Crown’s award-winning Earthbalance® programme.
Earthbalance® sets a blueprint for greener manufacturing and is centred on a commitment by the company to reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 10 per cent by 2015 and 25 per cent by 2020.
David McCombe, Manufacturing Director at Crown Paints said: “As a leader in the UK decorative coatings market, it’s essential that we seek to continuously improve our manufacturing and operational efficiencies, and the achievement of this award is testimony to that commitment.
“We are absolutely delighted our work has been recognised by the BCF and the award reflects the hard-work and dedication of staff across the entire plant.”
Crown Paints has been located in Hull for more than 200 years, and now manufactures over half of Crown Paints’ products.
The BCF award is the latest accolade secured by Crown Paints in recent years. Other successes include The Manufacturer’s Sustainable Manufacturer of The Year Award, the Supply Chain Sustainability School Gold standard, Green Apple awards and Insider’s Green Manufacturer of the Year title.
Crown has also flown the flag for manufacturing in Europe, as a UK national champion in the European Business Awards 2013/2014.
