Crown Trade paints complete environmental picture with new verification

Environmental considerations are becoming more and more important in the painting and decorating industry – and a new initiative from Crown Trade means you can access new information in this key area.

We’ve introduced Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) across a range of Crown Trade premium coatings.

Four Crown Trade products now hold verified EPD certificates, in compliance with the European Standard EN 15804.

These include Crown Trade’s Fastflow system, which was introduced into the marketplace last year – and has already built a strong reputation in the decorating industry for its ability to deliver all the benefits of an oil-based coating in a water-based formulation.

The complete system, comprising of Crown Trade Fastflow Primer Undercoat and Crown Trade Fastflow Gloss, has been assessed.

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt – trusted across high-traffic areas, including healthcare, educational and housing environments – also has an EPD certificate.

Featuring a super scrubbable finish, which allows repetitive cleaning with the added benefit of excellent stain resistance, Crown Trade Clean Extreme also extends maintenance cycles by returning to an ‘as new’ condition after cleaning.

Finally, another popular choice, Crown Trade Matt Vinyl, a premium quality flat matt emulsion for interior use on wall and ceiling surfaces, has a EPD certificate too.

Debbie Orr, Marketing Manager for trade brands at Crown Paints, said: “The EPDs are full lifecycle assessments of the environmental impacts of the products from raw materials and manufacturing, through use to end of life.

“Each EPD is independently verified to ensure that the data, data handling and resulting report are reliable. This means that if you are working for a specifier or architect looking for lifecycle assessment details you can offer them a credible point of reference.

“The EPDs are also aligned with the environmental requirements of BREEAM and LEED and also meet the requirements of the SKA rating scheme, so these Crown Trade products can be confidently specified in projects where environmental considerations are key.”

BRE, a world leader in certifying sustainable products, operates the EPD verification scheme to allow product manufacturers to communicate their sustainability credentials to customers. Dr Shamir Ghumra, Associate Director at BRE, said: “Crown Paints has shown great leadership by joining the growing number of companies who are choosing to provide the market with externally verified EPD to EN 15804.

“Having access to more transparent and credible environmental data in the supply chain will help to create stronger product specifications which will encourage a more widespread use of EPD.”

The development of the EPDs represents another chapter in our award-winning sustainability journey. Since 2008 Crown Paints, who manufacture Crown Trade, have run their sustainability programme, Earthbalance.®, with a focus on changing the way they do business in terms of social responsibility, the environment and the economy, rather than just focusing on the application of environmental benefits to a few niche products, or compromising on the quality of products to achieve green goals.

Earthbalance® has won a string of awards – most recently the Sustainability accolade at the Lloyds Banks National Business Awards – and has a meaningful impact in areas including the support of young people/apprenticeships, the circular economy (through a social enterprise-led waste recycling initiative), carbon reduction and ethical sourcing of materials.

The Crown Paints EPD certificates can be found online at GreenBookLive, a unique listing of environmental products and services.
