Take A Safe Approach With Crown Paints
Protecting staff and guests in the outbreak of a fire is a critical part of managing hotels and bed and breakfast establishments.
While many people think of factors such as escape routes, sprinklers and extinguishers, many owners and managers may not be aware that they can also introduce a simple paint-based solution from Crown Paints to enhance the safety of their building.
For more than 40 years, Crown Trade’s Timonox flame retardant system has played a key role in fire safety – slowing down the spread of flames and ‘buying’ precious time for buildings to be evacuated.
That’s a compelling reason to use it and now is a good time to look more closely into the system – particularly in light of new advances from Crown Paints in research and development.
When used on walls and ceilings Crown Trade Timonox can achieve the Class 0 status required by legislation including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO) in England and Wales and The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.
These new advances mean that only one coat of the new Crown Trade Timonox Upgrade Basecoat followed by two coats of a Crown Trade Timonox Emulsion topcoat are all it takes to offer protection against the rapid spread of flames and improve a Class 4 surface to a Class 0. Previously four coats were required.
David Spicer, Crown Paints’ Specification Technical Manager, said: “All surfaces painted with conventional paints have the potential to cause fire to spread very quickly throughout a building.
“Even previously non-combustible surfaces, such as plasterboard covered in layers of old paint, can become a mass of flames in seconds.
“This is a particular problem in common access and circulation areas.
“However, providing the existing coatings are sound, Crown Trade Timonox can restore a surface to the Class 0 rating required by the legislation and can help by slowing down and limiting the spread of flames throughout a building, giving invaluable time for staff and guests to get to a place of safety.
““This rating means Crown Trade Timonox is a great solution for properties such as hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and hostels.”
Crown Trade Timonox products apply like normal paint products, using either brush or roller and the topcoats are available in a wide-range of colours.
There is even a Scrubbable Matt option which allows repeated cleaning for high traffic areas, combining safety and exceptional durability in one system.
More information can be found on Crown Trade’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/CrownTradeTV which features a video about the new upgrade system. The short film features a ‘burn test’ comparing conventional paint and Crown Trade Timonox.
As well as Crown Trade Timonox, Crown Paints offers a range of specialist products for the hospitality sector.
These include the Crown Trade Steracryl Anti Bacterial and Crown Trade Steracryl Mould Inhibiting systems.
Both are available in matt and durable acrylic eggshell finishes, with the anti bacterial finish ideal for hygiene sensitive areas including kitchens, while the mould inhibiting paint can prevent mould growth in areas including bathrooms.
The outstanding qualities of Crown Trade Clean Extreme also make it an invaluable choice for hotels and guests houses. Available in scrubbable matt and acrylic eggshell formulations, the coating provides exceptional durability and longevity, which allows repetitive cleaning and the added benefit of excellent stain resistance.
Its super scrubbable finish also extends maintenance cycles by returning to an ‘as new’ condition after cleaning – reducing the need for costly redecoration.
